W e can’t all afford to buy a work of art for our home but you will be surprised how easy it is to whip up a state of the art grass sculpture. Grasses are the star this season and there is such a huge selection to choose from, whether they are picked from the garden or bought from a florists’ shop they won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Long lasting grasses mean you will have your own genuine living art for several weeks. From statuesque sculptures to meadows in a bowl all is possible with a little ingenuity, embellish the grasses with a couple of flowers and hey presto, striking designs to get everyone talking. Simplicity is the key so start now with our easy grass designs, then get more adventurous and experiment on your own.
Costs 2 bunches of China stripe leaves at £4.00 bunch approx 1 block Oasis £2.00 approx 2 Mini Anthuriums at approx £3.00 Striped Sculptures
Here’s a simple idea that looks like a work of art, is long lasting and takes a just a few minutes to achieve. What you need: - One block of OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam
- 2 Bunches of China Stripe grass (Liriope Muscari) approximately 25 grasses in a bunch, available from good florist shops.
- 2 small Anthuriums (available from good florist shops).
- Silver knob pins.
- A Glass Plate or bowl deep enough to hold a small amount of water.
- Glass beads or chippings optional.
Method Step 1 Cut the block of foam into two triangular shapes. The tallest approximately 22 cm tall and 9 cm wide. The small piece approximately 7 cm tall and 11 cm in wide. Make sure the bases of both pieces of foam are flat so that they will stand unaided. |
| Step 2 Submerge the foam in water for a few seconds until the foam has turned dark green. | | Step 3 Start with the smallest triangle of foam. Cover each end first by pinning grass tautly; making sure no foam is visibly. Then start pinning individual grasses at one side of the dome. Pulling them taut across the foam and securing the other side with another pin. Continue until the top of the foam is covered with leaves. | | Step 4 Then add the grass to the tallest triangle of foam. Trim the bases of the leaf neatly and pin into place. Pin the leaf securely into the top of the foam and let the tips of the grass curve naturally. | | Step 5 Arrange the leaf sculptures on the plate adding glass beads if desired. Recut the stems of the two Anthuriums , push one stem into the back of the tallest foam sculpture, the other into the front sculpture. | | Step 6 Top the plate up with a small amount of water daily | | | | |
Tip: If the grasses are not in stock at your local flower shop, ask the florist to order them in for you. Copyright © 2009 Lynda Owen. All Rights Reserved. |
